While the method used varies by orthoodontic treatment, all of our treatments follow a similar procedure.

During your free initial consultation, a complimentary x-ray is taken.

From here, your dentist or orthodontist will advise you on what type of orthodontic treatment is best suited to you, answer all your questions and advise on next steps.

If you will be wearing a removable orthodontic device, then follow these instructions to ensure you get the most from your treatment.

Commonly Asked Questions

What does an orthodontist do?

An orthodontist is a specialist in dentistry. Orthodontists deal with diagnosis and correction of misplaced teeth and jaw.

They correct bites, occlusions and align teeth using non surgical methods where applicable.

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

A dentist and orthodontist are both qualified dentists but an orthodontist is a specialist in the alignment and correction of teeth.

A dentist takes care of your overall oral health care.

A dentist will provide you with a treatment plan if any fillings, cleanings, x-rays or other dental work is needed.

How much are orthodontic treatments in Ireland?

Depending on what type of orthodontics you are aiming for there is a very broad price range.

Our treatments range from €1,540 to €5,720.

View our orthodontic price list page for more information.

3Dental orthodontic prices are extremely competitive in comparison to other orthodontic practices and we have no hidden costs.

Can an orthodontist pull teeth?

No, an orthodontist does not perform extractions.

If extractions are needed, the orthodontist will refer you to a general dentist to have the teeth removed.

Do braces move your teeth everyday?

Yes, you will feel slight movement everyday but it will be very small. Over time you will start to see a significant difference.

The first few days of braces or an appliance can be tender but you will never have extreme pain.

What procedures do orthodontists perform?

An orthodontist aims to straighten teeth and correct misplaced bites. Therefore, they use braces or a removable appliance (Invisalign) to straighten teeth.

If a pre-orthodontic appliance is needed you will be advised of this on the day of the consultation.

What is the fastest way to straighten teeth?

This question is a very common question, but everyone is different.

Braces and Invisalign have an average time frame but depending on the teeth, one option could be shorter than the other.

When you come in for your complimentary consultation, the option of which type of orthodontics can be discussed with you and the length of time for each.

What are the advantages of a specialist dentist and orthodontic team as opposed to a general dentist?

Having a multidisciplinary dental team providing orthodontic dental care can offer several benefits, such as:

  • Improved treatment outcomes
  • Individualised treatment
  • Access to a range of specialists
  • Better communication
  • And more

What are some of the advantages of an orthodontic consultation?

  • Get an X-ray and photographs of your teeth to assess your orthodontic needs
  • Early diagnosis of underlying issues and risk mitigation which might otherwise lead to more extensive or invasive treatment
  • The opportunity to discuss concerns or questions you have about your teeth with your dentist
  • Personalized treatment recommendations from your dentist for correcting orthodontic issues
  • Important information about additional orthodontic treatments you may not have been aware of, including long-term solutions to improve speech, chewing and overall dental health
  • Access to previous orthodontic cases to understand the likely results of your treatment
  • Meeting your dentist so that you can start building a relationship with them, understanding your treatment and knowing what to expect at each stage
  • Personalized recommendations for maintaining good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, and managing any discomfort
  • Peace of mind knowing that you are making an informed decision about your orthodontic treatment and have a clear plan

How does our pricing compare against the competition?

We offer extremely competitive pricing on orthodontic treatments. We provide free consultations and interest-free payment plans to make treatment even more affordable.

We recommend scheduling a free consultation to discuss your options and to receive a personalised treatment plan and detailed pricing information.

Can having braces lead to rounded teeth?

Having braces typically does not result in rounded teeth. Orthodontic treatment aims to create straighter teeth that fit together correctly, resulting in a functional, healthy bite.

In some cases, the shape of the teeth may be slightly altered during orthodontic treatment. For example, if a patient has severely crowded teeth, some teeth may need to be reshaped slightly to create enough space for the teeth to move into alignment.

In other cases, we may rotate a tooth slightly to improve its position, which can result in the perception of a different shape.

The benefits of orthodontic treatment far outweigh any minor changes in tooth shape that may occur. Straighter teeth can improve the bite's function, make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene and enhance the smile's overall appearance.

Additionally, properly aligned teeth can reduce the risk of dental problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw problems.

What reshaping or shaving of teeth will be needed after I have had braces?

After braces, it may be necessary to reshape the teeth to achieve the desired result.

Typically, we do this to improve the appearance of the teeth or to create a more functional bite.

In what situations are braces or other orthodontic treatments not the best option? What are the alternatives in these cases?

While orthodontic treatment such as braces can be an effective solution for many dental and facial treatments, there may be situations where it is not the best option. Some conditions where braces or other orthodontic treatments may not be the best option include:

Severe jaw misalignment: If a patient has a severe jaw misalignment, orthodontic treatment alone may not correct the problem. Surgical options such as orthognathic surgery may be necessary to reposition the jaws and achieve a proper bite.

Missing teeth: If a patient is missing one or more teeth, orthodontic treatment may not be enough to restore the bite and function of the teeth. In these cases, dental implants or bridges may be necessary to replace the missing teeth.

Teeth with inadequate bone support: If a patient has teeth that are very loose due to insufficient bone support, orthodontic treatment may not be the best option. In these cases, bone grafting or other surgical options may be necessary to improve the bone support and stability of the teeth.

Some non-surgical alternatives to orthodontic treatment include:

Clear aligners: Clear aligners such as Spark or Invisalign can be a great alternative to traditional braces for patients with mild to moderate dental irregularities. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning.

Dental bonding or veneers: Dental bonding or veneers may be a good alternative to orthodontic treatment for patients with minor cosmetic concerns such as small gaps or chips in their teeth. These treatments can help improve the appearance of the teeth without the need for braces.

Ultimately, the best treatment option depends on the patient's condition and goals. It's important to discuss your options with your dentist or orthodontist to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific situation.

Does 3Dental specialize in prosthodontics, endodontics, and orthodontics?

3Dental has prosthodontists, endodontists, and orthodontics. Our prosthodontic workflows use the latest 3D digital technologies in our onsite lab.

Endodontics is minimally invasive. Our endodontic treatments are extremely predictable and performed under a microscope. Our gentle endodontic treatments relieve discomfort.

Orthodontists see all our orthodontic patients. We use cutting-edge orthodontic technology.

Is orthodontic treatment the right treatment for me?

Orthodontic treatments can do wonders to improve a smile, but they're not for everyone—at least, not right away. If you're dealing with issues like tooth decay or gum disease, it's best to get those sorted out before you start straightening your teeth. Your health comes first.

If you're dealing with conditions like autoimmune disorders or diabetes, managing your health with your doctor's help is key before you move ahead with any orthodontic work. It’s all about making sure your body is ready for the changes it’s going to go through.

If you're a heavy smoker, drinker, or use illegal substances, these habits can affect how well your treatment works. It might be tough, but cutting back or quitting could make a big difference in getting the best results.

Lastly, if you're hoping for an instant perfect smile, it's worth remembering that great things take time. Orthodontic treatments can transform your smile, but patience is part of the process!

Orthodontics can help straighten teeth but often after treatment some bonding is recommended to improve the shape or fix chips and fractures.

What do I need to know before getting orthodontic treatment?

Well, like most things worth doing, getting your teeth straightened comes with a few challenges. Initially, you might feel a bit of discomfort as you adjust to your new braces—it's like breaking in a new pair of shoes. If your teeth need a lot of work, the treatment might take a bit longer, and you'll need to stay on top of things with extra care to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Keeping your teeth clean becomes super important too, because you want to make sure your smile is not just straight, but also sparkling at the end of your treatment.

You'll also have to say goodbye to some foods temporarily that could harm your braces. It's a small sacrifice for the greater good of a gorgeous grin!

And if you're worried about how metal braces might look, there's good news. Options like clear braces or Invisalign are pretty discreet, which can help keep those self-conscious feelings at bay and let you smile confidently while you're getting treated.

Do I need orthodontic treatment?

If you suffer from any of the following common orthodontic conditions, you could benefit from speaking with a member of our team:

  • Crowding: When the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate a person's teeth, they often become crooked or overlapping.
  • Spacing: Spacing occurs when the jaw is larger, causing the teeth to form gaps. While some are minor, others can be larger.
  • Malocclusion: Malocclusion is a common condition caused by the teeth misaligning when the jaws are closed. It can cause bite issues, including crossbites, underbites and overbites.
  • Open bite: This bite issue occurs when the top and bottom front teeth don't meet each other when the mouth is closed. It can cause numerous difficulties, including problems eating and talking.
  • Underbite: If the bottom teeth protrude over the top front teeth, it's called an underbite. Some people have minor underbites, while others have more pronounced issues.
  • Overbite: In contrast to underbites, an overbite is where the upper teeth hide the lower teeth.
  • Crossbite: Crossbites cause the upper teeth to sit inside the lower teeth, which can lead to them gradually wearing down.
  • Impacted teeth: Most commonly found in wisdom teeth, impacted teeth fail to emerge through the gumline properly, however, this issue can affect any tooth.
  • Midline misplacement: This is an alignment issue between the upper and lower teeth most noticeable with the front teeth. The teeth can appear off to one side and commonly occurs where some teeth eg second incisors ( laterals ) are missing or a canine tooth has failed to erupt ( impacted )
  • Protruding teeth: When the top front teeth protrude significantly (also known as buck teeth), it can cause numerous aesthetic issues and discomfort. It also increases the risk to the front teeth of chipping or damage in a fall.
