No Prep Dental Veneers vs Porcelain Veneers
Like porcelain veneers, no prep veneers work in a similar fashion in so far as the veneers are placed over your natural teeth.
Unlike porcelain veneers, no prep veneers are ultra-thin and do not require preparation for the tooth coloured shells to be bonded to your teeth.
The big difference between porcelain veneers and no prep veneers is that there is no need to shave the tooth enamel down for the veneer to fit.

How Does No Prep Veneers Work?
- Your Initial Consultation
- Maintenance
- Process
Your Initial Consultation
At your initial consultation your cosmetic dentist will discuss all the options you have to achieve a beautiful smile.
A fully costed treatment plan will be provided - or several plans if there is more than one option.
Photographs will be taken so the digital smile design process can begin so you can get to see how your smile can look before any treatment is started.
Often moulds or scans of your teeth will be taken so a protype of your veneers can be fabricated.
Maintenance
No prep veneers are maintained just like your own teeth.
At home regular brushing and flossing is essential.
Frequent visits to your hygienist and dentist are also very important.
The better you care for your veneers the longer they will last. Find out more in: 'How Long Do Veneers Last?'
Process
After your cosmetic dentist decides you are suitable for non prep veneers the planning and design begins!
A Digital Smile Design is created after discussions between you and the dentist on how you'd like your smile to be.
Once the Digital Smile Design is approved then a 3D prototype of your veneers are made. These will be tried in so you can see what your veneers could look like.
Once you are happy with the design then a scan is taken of your teeth and is sent to the lab to have your veneers made. A couple of weeks later you will return to have the Veneers bonded.
No drilling or injections required.

Commonly Asked Questions
Who are no prep veneers for?
- Those who want to conservatively correct their smiles
- Patients seeking improvements in symmetry and alignment
- Those who want to conceal crooked, uneven, gapped or chipped teeth
Am I suitable for no prep veneers?
Your cosmetic dentist will advise you if non prep veneers are the best choice for you.
Non prep veneers are an excellent, conservative option but not everyone is suitable.
Non-prep veneers may not be appropriate if a patient has:
- Severe tooth misalignment or crowding, orthodontic treatment may be necessary before veneer placement.
- Significant tooth decay or gum disease
- A history of teeth grinding or clenching
Ultimately, a thorough evaluation by your dentist is crucial to determine the suitability of non-prep veneers for each patient.
What are no prep veneers made out of?
No prep veneers are made out of a reinforced porcelain material of a tough but beautiful resin.
Are no prep veneers really no prep?
Yes!
No Drilling. No injections.
Is this a painful process?
Not at all. Completely pain free.
The veneers when bonded can take a few days to feel like your own teeth - but this is part of the process.
If I am not suitable for non prep veneers do I have any other options?
Absolutely.
Other options you may have are Veneers in a Day, Minimal Prep Veneers, Dental Bonding, Invisalign or short term cosmetic orthodontic treatment.
Your cosmetic dentist will guide you to which option is best for you.
All of these great treatments are available at 3Dental.
Are no prep veneers reversible?
Non prep veneers are designed to minimise the damage done to teeth by avoiding tooth surface removal.
However, a small amount of scratching is inevitable when they are removed.
Veneers have a lifespan of 10-20 years so in all likelihood they will need to be replaced at some point.
Unlike crowns and traditional veneers, the tooth removal is tiny and won’t really affect the teeth to any great extent. They are used to improve teeth that only need a little tweaking.
Are no prep veneers available near me?
Yes! We provide no prep veneers in each of our three clinics - Dublin, Limerick and Galway.
Book your free consultation today! We look forward to welcoming you in person soon :)
Is teeth shaving ever needed for this procedure?
Teeth shaving is generally not required for non-prep veneers.
This is because the veneers are placed directly onto the natural teeth without significant enamel removal.
I have very thin front teeth. Would non-prep veneers be suitable for me?
The suitability of non-prep veneers for individuals with very thin teeth depends on various factors such as:
- Dental health
- Aesthetic outcome
- Structural integrity
Given these considerations, it's crucial to consult your dentist for a personalised evaluation.
