Dental Implants Explained By Dr. Peter Doherty
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants Explained By Dr. Peter Doherty
A dental implant is a substitute for the root of a missing tooth. Implants are used to replace single teeth by placing a porcelain crown on top.
Alternatively, multiple teeth can be replaced by placing a dental bridge over several implants. They can also be used to hold dentures in position. Dental implants are a very elegant solution to the problem of missing teeth.
They are fixed in position, look and feel like natural teeth, and avoid the problems associated with bridges or dentures. They are the closest thing in dentistry to natural teeth.

Why Choose Dental Implants?
Dr. Peter Doherty Talks About His Experience Changing Lives Using Dental Implants
Dental implants are permanent and don’t require any adjustments to the adjacent teeth. They provide a significant long term benefit to your oral health!
They are also a permanent solution to wearing dentures. Dentures are removable and as such may move when eating and speaking. Some patients also find them bulky or uncomfortable to wear.
Bridges require the adjacent teeth to be filed down which may cause problems down the line. It is a shame to have to file down a healthy tooth and risk damaging or losing it.
Aftercare For Dental Implants
You will be numb for 1-2 hours following the procedure. During this period be careful not to bite your lip and tongue, or burn yourself with hot food or drinks.
After this numbness wears off expect some post-operative discomfort, which will subside in a few days.

The cost of that CT scan is €150.
If you proceed with the treatment, we will provide the CT scan to you for €50.
3D Scan To Assess Suitability
Bone is the foundation for a dental implant and it is essential to determine whether adequate bone is available for treatment.
To do this we take a high tech three dimensional CT scan of your mouth. This allows us to accurately determine the amount and quality of the bone available for implant placement. It also helps us to plan the treatment and decide where to place our implants.
The technology we have available allows us to take a scan of only a small section of the mouth, or the whole mouth as required by the number of teeth which need to be replaced.
Treatment Plan Devised
Using the information from your examination and CT scan we will provide you with a treatment plan which details the items of treatment required and gives you the exact costs of this treatment.
In cases where there is more than one option available you will receive a treatment plan for each option.
We will also plan how to temporarily replace the missing tooth or teeth during your implant treatment. You will not have to go around with a gap in your smile during treatment.
Moulds Of The Mouth Taken
In some cases we may need to take moulds or impressions of your mouth to plan your treatment.
These are then made into stone models of your teeth which we use to decide where it is best to place your implants.
Implant Placement
On the day of your implant placement, your gums will be numbed, so that the procedure is completely painless.
Some people may wish to have the treatment carried out under sedation which makes you feel very relaxed and removes any anxiety.
Afterwards, it is advisable to take some normal painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for a day or two.
We review patients two weeks after implant placement to make sure that the area has healed up properly, and to check that the area is being cleaned properly.
Treatment Times
Generally, once the implant has been placed, it must bond to the jaw bone for 3 months before taking impressions of your mouth. 3-4 weeks later the crown or bridge is ready to fit.
The total treatment time for a simple implant case is 4 months on average.
At 3Dental we can also provide a temporary crown or bridge on the same day your implant is placed if your situation is suitable.
