How Can Gum Surgery Improve My Smile?
There are various reasons that a patient would choose to have gum surgery. The symmetry of the teeth can change the appearance of the face.
By removing areas of the gum, we can contour around the teeth to give a more appealing appearance to the gums.
Sometimes if patients have a 'gummy' smile, the clinician can remove some of the gum to reveal more of the dentition and improve the smile.
Gum Surgery & Cosmetic Dentistry
Patients that have receding gums can benefit from gum surgery because using surgical procedures, we can grow the gums back.
Also, patients that are interested in cosmetic dentistry, such as veneers and bonding, can benefit from gum surgery if they present uneven gums. We can level the gum line before they get any cosmetic work done. So the teeth will look more symmetrical.
Gum surgery is a very delicate procedure where we use micro surgical instruments. The patient is numbed to make sure they are not feeling any pain.
Gum Surgery Cost
Gum surgery can range between €70 and €600 per tooth depending on the type of procedure.
We provide the following types of gum surgery:
- Periodontal surgery
- Receding gum line surgery
- Gingivectomy or crown lengthening (to remove excess of gum)

Initial Consultation
At 3Dental we will gather all the necessary information to make an individualized diagnosis and outline a plan of action.
This will include generally include x-rays and photographs.
Procedure
Depending on the procedure, we might be grafting gums to cover receding areas, or we could be removing excess of gums to contour the gums to become more symmetric.
For any type of gum surgery we will be using anaesthesia, which will numb the area to be worked on to make sure the patient is not feeling anything.
Gum surgeries are usually very delicate, with little or no drilling noises or vibration.
In most cases gum surgery can be carried out in 1 visit, ranging from 30 min to 1h 30 min.
Pain & After Care
Patients that have gum surgery due to a 'gummy smile' are usually not very sore afterwards.
They can expect a little bit of sensitivity, perhaps a tiny bit of bleeding that day, but following straightforward instructions, they should be ok after.
Patients that undergo gum removal procedures (to correct excess of gum and gummy smile) usually don’t experience much pain or swelling during recovery.
Aftercare would involve gentle but proper oral hygiene, some diet restrictions such as hard food for 1-2 weeks, and just regular painkillers.
Full aftercare instructions can be found on our Gum Surgery Post Op Instructions page.
