What Is A Gingivectomy?
Symmetry is one of the key components to an attractive smile. An uneven gum line can make an otherwise nice set of teeth appear unattractive.
Similarly, an excessive amount of gum on show when smiling can detract from the appearance.
A solution to this is to carry out a procedure known as a ‘gingivectomy’ (or gum contouring), which recontours an uneven or gummy smile.
How Does A Gingivectomy Work?
It can just be for one tooth, or for multiple teeth, dependant on the extent of the problem.
The procedure usually involves the removal of a portion of gum (aka gingiva) from in and around the teeth.
As well as treating a gummy smile or uneven gums, it can also be used to treat gum disease.
Cost Of A Gingivectomy
The cost of a gingivectomy starts at €350.
The more teeth that require treatment, the greater the cost.

Gingivectomy Procedure
A gingivectomy is a quite simple and straight forward procedure.
Patients are given a local anesthetic so that they can be made as comfortable as possible and ensure the procedure is pain free.
Using a surgical scalpel, or a low-frequency laser, the tissue is trimmed and removed.
The remaining gums are reattached in and around the teeth by stitches.
Finally, saline and special rinses are used to clean the area.
Before & After
On the right is a before and after shot of one of our female patients during her gingivectomy treatment.
We can see that her smile is less 'gummy' (excess gum tissue has been removed) in the after shot (on the right).

Commonly Asked Questions
What is a gingivectomy?
Gingivectomy involves removing a small amount of gum around a tooth.
Why would I need a gingivectomy?
If you have uneven gums it can make your smile look asymmetric, and make teeth look shorter than they should be. A gingivectomy can create symmetry in an uneven smile, and it can lengthen short teeth.
It is often used prior to having crowns or veneers done to enhance the result.
What can I expect after a gingivectomy?
You may get some really mild discomfort or a small amount of bleeding. It is generally not painful afterwards.
What is the difference between a gingivectomy and crown lengthening?
Gingivectomy involves the removal of some gum tissues around a tooth, while crown lengthening involves the removal of gum and bone from around a tooth.
Is a gingivectomy a high risk procedure?
No, a gingivectomy is a very safe, predictable and low risk procedure.
Can gingivectomy damage teeth?
No, it is not possible to damage teeth during a gingivectomy.
What does gingivectomy mean?
The “gingiva” is a dental term used to describe the gums.
Any medical word ending in “-ectomy” means surgical removal of a part of the body (eg tonsillectomy = removal of tonsils, appendectomy = appendix removal).
So “gingivectomy” means the removal of some gum tissue.
