What Are Dental Emergencies?
A dental emergency not only refers to tooth pain but other issues surrounding the tissues in the mouth which may need to be given immediate attention.
Examples of dental emergencies include, but are not limited to: infections, fractured tooth or dental restoration.
Fractures can often be classified as dental trauma and are most common in younger people, while dental restoration may also be called ‘dental filling’.

Commonly Asked Questions
How soon can I be seen?
We recommend calling first thing in the morning. We will always have emergency appointments available throughout the day.
If I am in pain what can I do?
If you have severe pain we highly recommend that you call and ask for an emergency appointment. We will aim to get you out of pain as quickly as possible.
My child has lost a tooth. What should I do?
Try to locate the tooth and place it in milk. Then, call us and let us know what has happened and we will arrange to have them seen.
What is the most common dental emergency?
Pulpitis, abscesses, pericoronitis and broken/chipped teeth are usually the most common dental emergencies.
Whenever there is pain involved, it can be considered an emergency.
A broken front tooth can also be considered an emergency, as it can be very embarrassing for the patient.
What do you do if you have a dental emergency?
You should get an appointment with a dentist to check what's going on and start the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.
Is losing a crown a dental emergency?
Not necessarily. It can be considered an emergency if it is causing you pain or if it is in a front tooth for aesthetic reasons.
Regardless of the circumstance, the crown needs to be replaced as soon as possible, at least for a temporary one, otherwise there is a risk of compromising the tooth structure that is left.
Is a dental abscess an emergency?
Definitely. Dental abscesses come from infections, and they need to be treated as soon as possible. You might require antibiotics, draining it, and sometimes some further treatment is necessary, like a root canal or an extraction, for example.
If you notice you have an abscess, unusual swelling or pus draining into your mouth, you should call us immediately.
