What Are Ceramic Braces?
Ceramic braces are a more visually subtle form of braces that blend in with your teeth.
They are also known as aesthetic, clear, or tooth-coloured braces.
Ceramic braces use clear or tooth-coloured brackets to hold your teeth in place. As a result, they are a much less visibly obvious alternative to the shiny silvery look of traditional metal brackets.
Therefore, they are pretty popular among people who want to wear braces without feeling self-conscious - like all adults!
Ceramic Braces Cost
You can get ceramic (clear) brackets with all of our orthodontic treatments for an additional cost of €100 per arch.
We provide a range of orthodontic options such as: 6 month braces, adult braces, train track braces and kids braces.
Our full pricing breakdown can be found on our pricing page.
We offer different payment plans depending on the orthodontic treatment required. We also offer finance plans in partnership with humm.
How Do Ceramic Braces Work?
Ceramic braces use clear or tooth-coloured brackets to give them a more subtle appearance. Still, these are not entirely invisible and can certainly be spotted at a conversational distance.
When we use white, clear, or tooth-coloured wires and elastic ties with the brackets, they become even more discrete.
These braces blend very well with the teeth, making them unnoticeable from a distance. They don’t draw much attention from up close, and it will take someone pointing them out for others to notice them.

The Procedure For Getting Ceramic Brackets
- Initial Consultation
- Procedure
- Maintenance
- Aftercare Routine
Initial Consultation
A consultation appointment with a dentist is the first step toward getting your braces fitted. We will discuss your goals and what you want to achieve with your treatment during your consultation.
You’ll also undergo an initial examination of your teeth to identify any existing or potential problems.
Your dentist will then discuss the best way forward with you before scheduling the date for the procedure.
Procedure
Your dentist will prepare ceramic braces according to your specifications. The procedure will begin by cleaning and drying your teeth.
The orthodontist will then apply adhesive to attach the brackets to your teeth before installing the archwires into the brackets. They’ll finish by using elastic bands to secure the archwires.
Maintenance
Your dentist will give you advice on how you can maintain your ceramic brackets.
They will also schedule your next appointment so they can adjust your braces and monitor your progress.
After the braces are put on your teeth and after adjustment, you can expect some sensitivity.
This discomfort usually passes quickly and can be managed with paracetamol if needed.
Aftercare Routine
Braces require a thorough aftercare routine to keep them clean. This aftercare routine includes:
- Regular brushing. There are more places for food and bacteria to stick on with braces.
- Regular flossing and use of interdental brushes i.e TePe interdental brushes.
- Avoid certain foods like nuts, caramel, gummies, and popcorn.
Regularly rinse your mouth with mouthwash.

Commonly Asked Questions
Do ceramic braces take longer?
No. The only difference with ceramic braces is the material the brackets are made from and how they look on your teeth.
Do ceramic brackets break easily?
No. Braces require some attention to maintain them, mostly avoiding hard or sticky foods that could detach the bracket. With ceramic braces, the same is true through ceramic brackets are not more likely to damage or detach.
However, your braces are more likely to break if you engage in contact sports. Make sure you put on a mouth guard every time you're playing to avoid this.
Are ceramic braces bad?
No. What could be wrong with something that makes you smile more often?
Which braces work the fastest?
You can expect similar results and duration with all types of braces.
Today, we have ceramic braces that can take as little as six months to align your teeth.
Do ceramic braces hurt more?
No. We have not found any additional discomfort in patients that choose clear braces.
Can I whiten my teeth with ceramic braces?
No. We recommend staying away from whitening toothpaste and other whitening products while wearing braces.
When you have ceramic braces on, part of your tooth is covered.
When we remove the braces, the part of your tooth that the brackets covered would be a different shade than the rest of your tooth.
Can you smoke with ceramic braces?
Being a smoker should not put you off getting ceramic brackets. The elastics that hold the wire in place are the component that is most prone to staining.
While we don't recommend smoking, we can freshen up the elastics during your adjustment visits.
Are ceramic brackets available near me?
Yes! We provide ceramic brackets in each of our clinics - Dublin (Red Cow), Dublin 2 (Aungier Street), Limerick and Galway.

Ceramic braces offer a more discreet alternative to metal braces.
Can ceramic braces stain teeth? If so, what can be done to prevent this?
Can ceramic braces be adjusted to match tooth shade?
However, the colour of ceramic braces is chosen to closely resemble the natural colour of your teeth, making them less noticeable.
Also, ceramic braces can use different colour elastics to blend in with your tooth shade.
These customizable elastics allow you to match the colour of your braces to your natural tooth colour, making the braces less noticeable.
How long does this treatment take?
Straightening your teeth with braces can take between six and twenty-four months, depending on the severity of the case.
Can someone change from ceramic braces to metal braces mid-treatment?
Switching from ceramic braces to metal braces and vice-versa mid-treatment is possible.
However, we do not recommend changing, and there is a charge.
You should make this decision in consultation with your dentist, who can assess your specific situation and can advise accordingly.
How are ceramic braces removed?
First, your dentist will gently loosen and remove the wires connecting the brackets.
After removing the wires, your dentist will carefully detach the ceramic brackets from the teeth using dental instruments.
Finally, they will polish off any remaining adhesive residue and thoroughly clean the teeth to ensure a smooth surface.
The removal process is typically painless, although patients may experience slight pressure.
