Dr. Carmen Anastasiu Explains How Dental Bridges Work

Dental bridges are similar to dental crowns but are used when a group of teeth are damaged beyond repair or missing.

They are specially fabricated for you, and are permanently fitted to ensure they stay strong and secure.

We also take care to ensure that our dental bridges are made to fit in with the rest of your teeth, discreetly, to give a natural and beautiful smile.

When Should A Dental Bridge Be Used?

When Should A Dental Bridge Be Used?

A dental bridge can be used to replace a tooth that has been extracted or to fill gaps where adult teeth never erupted.

If you are missing several teeth in a row, your dentist can design a bridge with multiple false teeth attached.

In all cases, the bridge sits against your gums and is cemented or otherwise attached to the teeth on either side of the gap.

It is a very good option for patients that are not suitable for an implant, or for many reasons decide not to go through a surgical procedure.

Your Initial Consultation

Once you make an appointment with 3Dental, the dentist will discuss the various options around dental bridges and discuss the suitability of the materials to suit your needs.

The dental bridge procedure usually requires 2 visits to the dentist. These visits can be broken down as follows:

  1. We will take impressions of your teeth and prepare your teeth for your bridge. Normally, after the first visit, you will leave with a temporary bridge. For more information on temporary bridges, please check out our Temporary Bridges page.
  2. Our dental technicians will then make your bridge on site in our dental lab. During the second visit, your dentist will fit your new bridge.
Preparing Your Teeth

Preparing Your Teeth

An appointment will then be set for you to have your teeth prepared for the crowns. An impression will then be taken of the teeth.

These impressions will be used in our lab to fabricate your custom teeth.

The dentist will then give you temporary teeth so that you don’t have unsightly gaps when leaving the clinic.

Find out how to care for this temporary bridge in our temporary bridge aftercare page.

Fitting Your Bridge
Fitting Your Bridge

Fitting Your Bridge

Once your bridges are complete the dentist will then arrange an appointment to fit them.

All going well the process can be completed in 2/3 weeks.

The bridge also helps to maintain the long-term structure of the mouth. Normally, a gap as a result of a missing tooth can cause the neighboring teeth to shift gradually or spread out, thus causing a bite issue.

Nowadays, dental implants are quite a popular treatment option, due to their natural appearance and longevity in the mouth.

Also, implants don’t cause any damage to your other teeth as bridges sometimes can, since the teeth adjacent to the gap need to be prepared (drilled) to be the pillars of the bridge.

However, not everyone is suitable for dental implants.

You may not be suitable for a dental implant if:

  • You have a weak or eroded jaw bone structure that would not support an implant
  • It would heal poorly due to diabetes or autoimmune diseases

In these instances, your dentist may recommend replacing your missing tooth with a dental bridge instead.

Commonly Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get a dental bridge?

Each crown unit of a bridge costs €550, depending on the type of material used.

The total cost of your bridge will depend on how many units you are getting.

More information can be found on our pricing page.

Are there any age limits?

Ideal candidates are aged 18 and above. There is no upper age limit for dental bridges.

Being able to smile with confidence and taking pleasure in the foods you enjoy most should be something people of all ages can do.

How long does it take?

Once you have had your initial consultation and have been given the treatment plan, you will be given your preparation appointment.

Once we begin the process you should have your finished bridge within 6 weeks.

Do you offer finance for dental bridges?

Yes we have different options available.

Check out our payments plans and humm page for some background information.

Please also discuss this with the front of house staff. They will give you the best advice.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

It depends on each situation.

Some patients are not suitable for implants due to poor bone quality or quantity, so a bridge can be the ideal solution to replace missing teeth.

Do dental bridges come out?

No. Dental bridges are bonded with a special cement, so they stay strongly fixed to your remaining teeth.

Is it painful to get a dental bridge?

Not at all. The area will be numbed before the procedure.

After the bridge is fitted and adjusted to your mouth, it should feel perfectly comfortable.

Can I get treated for a dental bridge near me?

Yes! We provide dental bridges in each of our three clinics - Dublin, Limerick and Galway.

Book your free consultation today! We look forward to welcoming you in-person soon :)

What type of cement is used for a dental bridge?

Resin-based composite is the cement that is most commonly used for a dental bridge.

This type of cement provides strong adhesion and aesthetics.

While allergic reactions to dental cement are rare, some individuals may experience sensitivities or allergies to specific adhesive components.

In such cases, alternative options include using a different cement formulation.

It is essential to discuss any known allergies or sensitivities with your dentist to determine the most appropriate cement or alternative materials for your dental bridge.

For patients who need a temporary bridge, are these typically robust? How can patients take precautions to ensure a temporary bridge does not break?

Temporary bridges are designed to be sturdy but are not as durable as permanent bridges.

They serve as placeholders until the permanent restoration is ready.

Patients can take precautions to avoid breaking a temporary bridge by:

  • Avoiding hard or sticky foods
  • Chewing on the opposite side of the mouth
  • Practising good oral hygiene, such as gentle brushing and flossing around the bridge area

It is essential to follow your dentist's instructions regarding the care and maintenance of the temporary bridge to ensure its longevity and prevent any accidental damage.
