Dr. Paula Taracido Explains Adult Braces At 3Dental
Adult braces are a great way to give yourself the smile you've always wanted.
Typically adults will have restorations, fillings or some sort of gum recessions so it's often a longer process.
Adults tend to be more concerned with the cosmetic outcome rather than the functional outcome of braces.
You will receive a full orthodontic treatment plan (that outlines the plan for your treatment) once you attend your free consultation.
How Much Do Adult Braces Cost?
Depending on the treatment required, comprehensive adult braces range from €2,420 to €4,950.
Payment plans range from €140 to €185 per month depending on the orthodontic treatment required.
You can view our payment plans on our pricing page. We also offer humm as a payment plan option.
We offer free consultations so we can discuss what the best option is for you!
Orthodontic Options Available To Adults
Adults have a number of teeth straightening options available such as:
- Fixed braces: Braces that are temporarily fixed to your teeth
- Invisalign: A system of removable, clear aligners
- 6 Month Braces: Fixed brackets which typically straighten your teeth in approximately 6 months - these come with either metal or ceramic brackets - depending on your preference
While it may be difficult to know what option may be best from just researching online, we offer free consultations where we evaluate your situation and can recommend a suitable treatment based on your budget and your smile goals :)
What Are Adult Braces?
Adult braces are essentially any orthodontic appliance used to treat those over 16 years old.
Adult braces can be either metal (train tracks) or clear braces. We also provide functional appliances to help in cases where expansion or bite changes may be required.

Intro To Adult Braces
Adult braces are typically a longer process than braces for kids.
Typically adults will have restorations, fillings or some sort of gum recessions so it's usually a longer process. Typically adults are concerned with the cosmetic appearance rather than the functionalitiy.
6 Month Braces v Adult Braces
6 month braces is usually used to correct mild to moderate problems in the font teeth only e.g. spacing, crowding, rotated teeth.
Invisalign does the same thing as 6 month braces but it is an invisible aligner that can be taken in or out. It also usually takes a little longer to fix the smile.
Adult braces are frequently used to correct all the teeth - not just the front ones.
Invisalign v Adult Braces
For more complex or severe problems and for bite problems we tend to recommend the fixed braces option (either metal or clear).
Invisalign is a great option for adults who don’t want to wear traditional train track type braces. It can correct most mild to moderate orthodontic problems e.g. spacing, crowding, rotations.
Aftercare for Adult Braces
With all braces you have to wear retainers after you have finished the treatment to keep your teeth straight. This is a lifetime commitment.
We recommend retainer checks at 1 month and again at 6 months. We also recommend yearly check ups.
It is important with all braces to maintain good oral hygiene, especially if a permanent bonded retainer was used.
We recommend twice a year hygienist appointments to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Retainers are guaranteed for 1 year but usually last 2 years or so before they need to be replaced.

Commonly Asked Questions
How do adult braces help?
Adult braces treat several dental issues that affect oral health, function, and appearance. They help fix overcrowding, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. They also help fix crooked or misaligned teeth. Adult braces gently move teeth into their right places. This improves alignment, occlusion (your bite), and smile harmony.
Are there any age limits?
Adult braces are for adults 16+.
Can I choose between clear braces and metal braces?
Yes, at 3Dental we have both clear braces or metal braces to choose from.
How long does the average treatment last?
The length of time of treatment depends on the complexity of the treatment, it is best to talk to your orthodontist to gauge the timeframe.
Are adult braces for suitable for everyone?
Most adults can wear adult braces with no issues. In cases of major jaw misalignment or bone differences, orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery may need to be done at the same time for the best results. In this case, adult braces might not be the best idea.
People with major gum disease or not enough bone support might not be good candidates for adult braces, either.
In these cases, it might be better to get tooth implants or another type of treatment.
Most of the time, adult braces can give you great benefits, changing your smile and giving you more confidence. Talking to a professional dentist is important because they can look at your case and figure out the best treatment for you.
Do I need to wear a retainer?
In short, yes. If you have orthodontic treatment to move teeth, the teeth want to move back. A retainer is the best method of maintaining your straight teeth.
How long do adults wear braces?
This depends on the problem being treated. Moderate problems can be fixed usually within 6 months to 1 year.
Adults wanting to move front teeth and improve their smile are often suited to 6 month braces.
More severe problems and bite issues take a minimum of 1 year and sometimes 2 or more years.
Your orthodontist will be happy to discuss time frames with you on your free consultation appointment.
How long do braces last?
Once your braces are complete and removed you will be fitted with retainers (often both fixed and removable).
Then your teeth will remain in place indefinitely as long as you wear your retainers. As with everything in your body as you age changes happen.
The top jaw tends to expand and the bottom jaw tends to shorten causing minor teeth movements. The retainer will help to minimize these natural movements.
Are adult braces available near me?
Yes! We provide adult braces in each of our three clinics - Dublin, Limerick and Galway.
Book your free consultation today! We look forward to welcoming you in person soon :)
Are adult braces needed for top and bottom teeth?
Adult braces may be necessary for top and bottom arches depending on the treatment goals. Dentists can improve face symmetry, fit, and smiles by caring for both upper and lower teeth.
Sometimes only one arch needs braces because the other is already in place.
Your dentist will discuss your needs and create a customized treatment plan. This layout may contain braces on the top and bottom arches or just one.
Can adult braces help chipped teeth regrow?
Adult braces can help with alignment but they cannot help chipped teeth regrow. Various orthodontic treatments including adult braces can improve alignment and look.
Beyond braces, dental bonding, veneers and crowns can all help. These procedures restore structure, form, and function for a natural, long-lasting result.
Do adult braces deliver good long-term results?
With good care, the effects after taking off adult braces are generally steady and last a long time.
When a person has had dental therapy, they get braces to keep their teeth straight.
Retainers keep teeth from moving and keep them in the new position.
Wear your retainers as your dentist tells you to keep your results.
Adult braces can last longer and improve mouth health if they are checked by a dentist regularly and kept clean.
